Individual counseling provides an opportunity to work through tough life concerns. Overcome anxieties and fears. Discover who you are, what you value, and what brings joy in your life.
Anxiety is a future-orientated mood state. Many times we worry needlessly about an event or activity that will happen down the road. A little anxiety can bolster performance but when it becomes overwhelming and exhausting it impacts every aspect of our lives. Many of my clients find the breathing, mindfulness, and guided imagery exercise taught in session helpful. It allows them to quiet non-productive thoughts and focus on what is in their control. It empowers them to review, think, and act. You don’t have to live with it.
At some point in our lives we experience sadness or depression. This emotion can be triggered by a passing of a loved one or just feeling stuck. That makes everyday activities, such as getting out of bed, engaging with family and friends, focusing on work, and enjoying favorite hobbies difficult. In a safe, caring, and compassionate environment, I’ll help you identify and explore depression triggers. Together will create coping strategies that manage your symptoms. You are not alone. I can help!
I approach addictions as a disease as well as a mental health concern. Together we will identify and examine the reasons why you choose/chose to use a substance or engage in addictive behaviors. An addiction is often a symptom of a larger pain. Once we understand the triggers, we can develop coping strategies, change behaviors, and heal past traumas. We will focus on what you want in your life today and find ways to bring those joys into your life every day.
Becoming angry or irritated about a situation is a natural emotion. Sometimes our anger gets out of control and holds us back from completely engaging with family and friends or getting that next promotion. I will work with you to identify triggers, situations, and unresolved pain that create distress in your life. I’ll teach you how to acknowledge and use that energy positively. And I’ll help you develop strategies to keep you in control during upsetting situations.
Grief and Loss
Grief is a powerful emotion. It is hard to “just move on.” Part of you is lost. Grieving the loss of a loved one takes time and energy to heal the wounds. Even if we were expecting it and know our loved one is in a better place, we feel the emptiness they once occupied. Sometimes the best healing is by talking about that person, life you had with them, and sharing memories. I will walk alongside you and help you move forward at your pace.
Traumatic events are usually life threatening and involve physical harm. Any situation that leaves you feeling fearful, helpless, alone, or hopeless is a traumatic event. These feelings can start immediately or surface years later, creating sadness, emptiness, or anxiety. They can create conflict or pain that impacts everyday relationships. Post-traumatic stress is a natural response to trauma. Those that suffer, often cope with flashbacks, nightmares, or sleep disturbances. There is hope and help. I work holistically and through the use of narrative exercises to help you rewrite the event and move forward with your life.
